Design Futures Final Presentation
- Design Future Final PresentationDesign Research, Presentation, Strategy
- The 2011 Design Futures class at Pratt Institute was concerned with one question: how can design save the Garment District? Once a flourishing industry sector in Manhattan, the Garment District has fallen into disrepair over the last 30 years, and is no longer a capital of the fashion world as it once was.Our teams solution was to create a fashion hub within the district: a place where sustainably sourced materials providers could connect with local workers and where these same local workers could help pass on the dying practices of their trades. We reached this conclusion through a long ideation process and analysis of stakeholder needs in the district. We examined zoning concerns, looked at companies who could benefit, considered local workers desires and balanced them all against identified needs of the district as a business center. This lead to an opportunity that existed at the intersection of all of the vested stakeholders. The group envisioned a design centered head quarters on the corner of 38th and 7th avenue that would serve as the go-to for the new fashion center. This center would lead to a 5-year transformation of the area, bringing in shops, fashion-tourism, and events that would re-establish the District. These ideas were formalized in a presentation and final report which were delivered to officials from the City of New York and key members of several organizations trying to save the Garment District. The final presentation is included belowMethodologies used:
- SWOT
- Mind Mapping
- Financial Projections
- Design Research
- Creative Ideation
